2022 French Grand Prix Offers Attractive Longshots

Other Jul 13, 2022

Many bettors see this as a two-driver race – Verstappen vs. Leclerc.  However, we see this as a great opportunity to bet on a longer shot with a proven driver who knows how to win.

The French Grand Prix is one of the longest-running and most-prestigious auto races in the world. And since betting on Formula 1 racing is on the rise, this weekend's big race provides an exciting competition to watch as well as a terrific opportunity to make a few wagers.

The most popular bet to make on Formula 1 is simply picking the winner of the race. Sounds so easy, but it's not.

Oddsmakers at Spreads.ca make Max Verstappen the solid favourite as the first driver to first see the famed checkered flag. Betting 1.00 on Verstappen will return 2.15 if he wins.  Charles Leclerc (at 1.00 to win 2.50) is the second betting choice.

The reasons for these short odds on the duo of faves are clear: Verstappen is the defending champion in Marseille and also enjoys the season's points lead through 11 races. The Belgian-Dutch racer already has six victories under his belt in 2022 alone, while Leclerc currently ranks second in points. We should also point out that Leclerc overcame late-race mechanical issues and held off Verstappen to win the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix held last week. The victory was his third of the season

So, many bettors see this as a two-driver race – Verstappen vs. Leclerc.

But we see this as an excellent opportunity to take a longer shot with a proven driver who knows how to win and offers a much better price.

First, here's a glance at the outright winner candidates of the 2022 French Grand Prix and their odds:

Our Prediction (powered by Pointspreads.ca):

We like British driver Lewis Hamilton (1.00 to win 10.00) at the generous odds.

Hamilton was the betting favourite in last year's race and had the lead on this course but faded in the final moments to finish in second place, just 2.9 seconds back.

Hamilton, who shares an all-time career record with 7 World Drivers' Championship titles, will be driving for Mercedes, which has an impressive "track" record on this layout.

Verstappen is enjoying a monster year, so far, but we have to take the generous price on a proven driving legend.
