After Week 2: CFL Power Rankings (Winnipeg Blue Bombers Keep the Top Spot)

Oh-Canada Aug 17, 2021

The Canadian Football League 2021 regular season just completed Week 2.

After an opening week full of surprises (recall that all four underdogs covered the spread and three dogs won the games outright), things went more according to prediction in the second game for most teams.

In all, four more games were played, with one bye.  The Winnipeg Blue Bombers retain the top spot in the weekly Power Rankings, now heading into Week 3. However, there has been some significant shakeup in the CFL Grey Cup futures betting and odds.  Note the new favourite to win the cup and lots of fluidity among the ranks of the league's nine teams:

As for the perceived strength of teams, unlike futures odds (which arguably SHOULD be the barometer of true rankings) the actual Power Rankings aren't panicking yet.  Nevermind that Calgary, Edmonton, and the BC Lions are all winless at 0-2.  Despite a horrible start to the season, they still rank ahead of the disrespected Ottawa Redblacks, who (drum roll please!) remain undefeated at 1-0.

Supposedly, an 0-2 start isn’t the end of the world for those three teams.  But in a shortened season, it makes for more ground to be made up with less time.  Now, we'll really see who belongs where on the Power Rankings in the coming weeks.

Here’s the CFL breakdown – with comments -- we head into Week 3, which begins Thursday night.  What follows are the complete power rankings #1 through #9 according to the official CFL website:

Also note that we'll post Week #3 picks and predictions from our in-house handicapper Nick on Thursday morning.
