Best Bets of the Day: Friday, Aug. 21st

Other Aug 21, 2020

Welcome to another edition of “Best Bets of the Day.”

Previous Day’s Record:  2-1

Overall Record:  3-3

Monday was a winning day for us as Inter blew out Shakhtar (we told you that Lautaro was due) and Zac Gallen pitched like an Ace with a capital "A" in the Arizona Diamondbacks win against the red-hot Oakland A´s.  The only blemish was trusting Joel Embiid to dominate the Celtics.  Steering away from that.

This Friday is chock full of pivotal Game threes in the NBA Playoffs; the Europa League final between Sevilla and Inter will crown a champion that secures a bid in the European Super Cup with the Champions League victor; and we have both a quadruple header in the NHL Playoffs; and as a huge bonus – an intriguing slate of MLB games.

Is it Christmas yet?  Because that seems like a miracle.

With so much going on, it may seem hard to know what and where to put your money on, so here are three marquee events to focus on.  All betting lines are as of Thursday, August 20.

Los Angeles Clippers (-225) vs Dallas Mavericks (+165)

This should be a statement game for the favored Clippers, since they will have spent the last 48 hours listening to every talking head yapping about how Paul George is shrinking while Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis loom large in a series that many think would be 2-0 in favor of the Mavericks if Porzingis hadn't been ejected in the third quarter of Game 1.

I expect Doc Rivers´ squad to win in convincing fashion to regain not only the series lead, but their reputation as the favorites in the West with or without Patrick Beverley.

Also, take the over in points if the over/under is below 235.  Game 1 gave us 128 sans Porzingis and Game 2 jumped to 141 with the Latvian giant on the court the entire game.

My picks:  LA Clippers with a spread of -5 points (-114) and the OVER at 232 (-116).  Bet both together in a parlay for (+249) odds

Upset Pick of the Day!

Sevilla (+240) vs Inter (+115)   Draw (+245)

Inter is coming off a convincing 5-0 victory over an overwhelmed Ukrainian opponent and they have more of the marquee names, so that’s why they are favored to lift the trophy.  However, Sevilla had the more impressive win in comeback fashion 2-1 over Manchester United and has had 24 extra hours to rest.

Expect Sevilla goalkeeper Bono to make some key saves and winger Lucas Ocampos to be the difference maker to allow the Spanish side to prevail and lift the Europa League trophy for the third time since 2015.

My Pick: Sevilla  2-1  Inter Milan

Philadelphia Phillies (-110) vs Atlanta Braves (-110)

It´s an aces duel as Aaron Nola (2-1, 2.05 ERA) is on the mound for the Phillies and Max Fried (3-0, 1.24) face off in Atlanta.  Nola has been outstanding with an 0.86 ERA in the month of August.  In fact, he only allowed one run, two hits and struck out 10 Braves in 8.0 innings during a 13-8 Phillies win on August 10.

Meanwhile, Fried shut out the Phillies in five innings of a shortened seven inning game that the Braves won 8-0 on August 9. Fried´s August ERA is 0.52.

Go with the stud at home for this contest.

My pick:  Atlanta Braves -110
