British Open Tees Off Thursday
The 150th edition of the British Open Championship will take place at the Home of Golf
The fourth and final major golf tournament of the season will be played this week, Thursday-Sunday, in Sandwich, Kent (England).
This should be a fascinating golf event, both from a spectator and gambling point of view. It's now back to links golf for the very best players in the world as the Royal St. George's Golf Club will be an intriguing host. Indeed, this venue can be a wildly unpredictable course. Plenty of bunkers, gusty winds, and conditions many tour pros aren't used to experiencing are going to give players in this field all they can handle. The only thing viewers and bettors can expect is a chaotic weekend on the leaderboard.
When Royal St. George's hosted most recently – in 2003 and 2011 – those were both years that saw four first-time major champions. That won't happen in 2021 since Phil Mickelson won the PGA Championship win earlier this year. But there's compelling evidence that we could see another first-time major champion crowned on British soil.
Here's a look at the top dozen betting favourites heading into the British Open:

It's no surprise Jon Rahm is the top betting favourite at +800 odds (wager $100 to win $800) to capture the trophy. This competition follows his impressive U.S. Open victory in June at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, CA.
Among the favourites, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are the only golfers to capture the Open Championship in the past. McIlroy accomplished the feat in 2014 at the Old Course at St Andrews, while Spieth captured the championship in 2017 at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.
Royal St. George's Golf Course last hosted this event in 2011. The winner that year was Darren Clarke. What a difference a decade makes: He's listed as a 500-1 longshot to win this week at the British Open.
On the other side of the coin, longtime touring pro Lee Westwood could make history this week, but it's the kind of history he’d like. If Westwood doesn’t win at Royal St. George’s in what is his 88th career major championship appearance, he will have the most major starts all-time without a victory – breaking out of a tie with Jay Haas.
