Canada Thrashes Americans, Prepares for Czechs in World Juniors Final

Decisive 6-2 win over rival USA propels Canada into the championship game

Trailing 0-2 in the semifinals on Wednesday night against their USA rivals, the mighty U-20 Canadians scored six unanswered goals to advance to their fourth straight IIHF championship game, and sixth appearance in 7 years.

Canada will play the Czech Republic, which won a hard-fought 2-1 win in their semifinal game against Sweden, played earlier in the day.

Canada is now just one step away from its 20th gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship. The heavily-favoured team that was expected to win it all appears confident, and is now on the doorstep of making history.

At the game on Wednesday, heavily-partisan Canadian fans chanted "we want gold" at Scotiabank Centre as the final outcome became increasingly clear to everyone.  It now appears that Canada may get what they ask for, though the Czechs may have just a word or two to say about drawing any early conclusions.

The final will be played on Thursday, Jan. 5 with a puck drop at 7:30 pm ET / 4:30 pm PT.

The USA-Sweden consolation game starts at 3:30 ET/ 12:30 PT.

Opinion (powered by Pointspreads.ca):

Canada is heavily favoured, and rightly so.

Even with a few scares in this tournament -- including one loss and an OT win -- when Canada plays their best, they appear unbeatable. This is especially true in front of a home crowd.

But let's keep this in mind: The Czechs are also a talented group and are probably the value for those who bet numbers, rather than teams and emotions.

Our conclusion is this – we lean to the Czech Republic on various props to keep this final close and competitive.  But we also agree this is Canada's year.
