Canadians Taking Plenty of Shots in March Madness

Oh-Canada Mar 22, 2022

When we think of "Canadian basketball," the Toronto Raptors is probably the first thing that comes to mind.

However, this year's March Madness tournaments (men's and women's) includes no less than 47 players among all the teams that made it into the post-season. In fact, the 2022 NCAA tournament includes 27 men and 20 women who participated in this year’s March Madness who are Canadians.

The Canadians also happen to play on some really good teams -- 5 Canadians are playing on Top-4 seed or better in the men’s tournament, while 8 Canadian women play on a team ranked #1 - #4.

The biggest names are top Canadian prospect Andrew Nembhard (Aurora, Ont.), who plays with Gonzaga. The 22-year-old is averaging career highs in points, assists, rebounds, and steals as he and projected No. 1 overall NBA pick (he's pictured above).

For Arizona, which is a #1 seed, Bennedict Mathurin (Montreal, Que.) averages 17.8 PPG, this season.  He'll probably be either a #1 or #2 pick in the NBA draft.

A third Canadian player to watch is Zach Edey (Toronto, Ont.) who plays for Purdue, which is still alive in the Sweet Sixteen.

You can bet on Round 3, which begins this Thursday and Friday. Indeed, by Friday night, we'll be down to the Elite Eight. Odds are, at least a few Canadians will still be shooting for a championship.
