Canadian Football Picks and Projections – Division Finals

Both divisional finals to be played this Sunday afternoon look to be intriguing matchups.

Montreal plays at Toronto in the early game. The latter matchup features British Columbia at Winnipeg.

The big question in both games is -- which of these two contests is most likely to end in an upset? Could Montreal possibly stun the rest of the CFL and make their first Grey Cup appearance since the Anthony Calvillo era way back in 2010? And, do the BC Lions have a shot at knocking off the back-to-back reigning champion Blue Bombers?

The answer to both seems to be -- yes. As in, it's possible.

Based on the odds at Spreads.ca (Toronto -3.5), it appears public trust in the Alouettes is growing. Montreal closed their season strongly, winning 6 of their final 8 games, and was impressive in last week's 28-17 victory in the semi-finals versus Hamilton.

Also at Spreads.ca, the BC Lions are also not getting quite as many points as one might expect, especially given the Blue Bombers' CFL dominance in recent seasons. BC won 4 of their last 5, including a dominant 30-16 win against Calgary in the semis.

Spreads.ca lists Winnipeg as a -4.5 points favourtie as the host.

MON-TOR kicks off at 1 pm ET / 10 am PT in Toronto. BC-WPG follows at 4 pm ET / 1 pm PT.

Prediction (powered by Pointspreads.ca):

Early game -- Toronto lost to Montreal in the final regular season contest, but that didn't matter to the Argos who were already destined for a bye. What's more alarming for Toronto is they were 0-2-1 against the spread in their 3 games against Montreal. Moreover, the Alouettes are an impressive 5-2-1 against the number in their last eight games. Therefore, we have to take Montreal plus the points in what's expected to be a close game.

Late game -- BC will meet WPG for the third time in over a month. The teams split their first two meetings. We believe the Blue Bombers have been on cruise control since midseason, awaiting this game when things now will count the most. They were due to suffer some disinterested lapses while coasting along to the CFL's best record. However, now that they're within just two wins away from a trifecta and talk of a CFL dynasty, this should be enough motivation to push the talented favourite over the number and get the cover.

We like MON +3.5 and WPG -4.5
