Welcoming the Don of the NHL
Don Cherry is a living legend. The Canadian ice hockey commentator and sports writer started out as a professional hockey player and National Hockey League (NHL) head coach.
He coached the mighty Boston Bruins for five seasons and led his team to two Stanley Cup Final appearances. Later, Cherry co-hosted "Coach's Corner" a popular show during CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada" broadcast.
Well known for his outspoken manner, opinions, and flamboyant dress Cherry was even voted by viewers as the seventh-greatest Canadian of all-time in the CBC miniseries "The Greatest Canadian." In 2010, his amazing life was dramatized in a two-part CBC movie, "Keep Your Head Up, Kid: The Don Cherry Story," based on a script written by his son, Timothy Cherry. In 2012, CBC aired a sequel, "The Wrath of Grapes: The Don Cherry Story II."
Cherry now co-hosts a weekly show, The Don Cherry Grapevine Podcast.
Pointspreads.ca is thrilled to have this icon of the ice rink joining us with multiple picks each week. Check back regularly for Cherry's NHL thoughts and picks, always free and totally from the heart, with the help of his canine associate, "Blue."
Don Cherry's NHL Pick for Wednesday:
Toronto should be rested and ready when the puck drops on Wednesday night. The Maple Leafs have played just one game since the NHL postponement, a 6-0 shellacking of Ottawa four nights ago. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers limp into this matchup at the very end of a brutally long road trip (last home game was way back on Dec. 16. It doesn't help Edmonton's (mis)fortunes that they've lost four straight, are playing 3 games in 5 nights, and face one of the NHL's best teams. Laying -165 seems reasonable.
The Cherry Pick: Toronto Maples Leafs -165 (moneyline)
