The defending world champion Los Angeles Dodgers are favoured to repeat at the 2021 World Series winner. Yet, the San Francisco Giants, who finished the regular season with the best record in baseball, are getting no respect at all.
Heading into the 2021 playoffs, the betting markets are taking shape.
No surprise, the reigning world champs are favoured to repeat. The LA Dodgers, who won 106 games this season, are +385 to get their second straight championship.
What is a big surprise is the way the San Francisco Giants continue being disrespected by the betting public. The surprise Cinderella team that posted a whopping 107 wins, bested the mighty Dodgers in the tight N.L. West, and ultimately finished with the best record in the major league opened at +700 to win the World Series. That's nearly twice the odds of the favoured Dodgers.
Excuse me. That's ridiculous.
The American League favourites are the Houston Astros, who won 95 games this season. The Astros were expected to be strong entering the 2021 campaign, but didn't enjoy quite the same confidence this season as in years past. Those odds appear just a little short and should be higher.
The Chicago White Sox who won their division in a runaway rank second in the A.L., listed at +700. Hence, the ChiSox and Giants are looked upon by betting markets in the same way, insofar as their chances to win the championship.
As I said, this is ridiculous.
Another surprise team and odds price is the massive disrespect shown to the Tampa Bay Rays, who topped the best division in the majors. Despite four teams in the brutally-tough A.L. East winning 90+ games, the Rays reigned supreme. In fact, their first-place finish was a foregone conclusion a month ago. Tampa Bay is listed at +750, arguably the best value on the entire board.
Milwaukee and the Atlanta Braves are looked upon as also-rans. Credit the Brewers who everyone seems to be overlooking. The Braves don't even deserve to be in the playoffs, winning a pathetically-weak division with what amounts to the 12th-best record in the majors. Consider this fact: If Atlanta was in the A.L. East, they would have finished in fifth place.
The real shocker as to the odds is the fact the favoured Dodgers still must win a one-game Wild Card playoff on Wednesday night. In one baseball game, anything is possible. So, it's absurd the Dodgers are listed this high when they could be eliminated in a single game, that is, if the Cardinals put up a super effort in the Wild Card game.
Boston and New York, longtime rivals will play the first Wild Card game on Tuesday. The Yankees who were among the hottest teams in baseball during the second half of the season are +1100. The Red Sox, who stumbled down the stretch are now +1600.
Best Betting Values: San Francisco (+700) and Tampa Bay (+750)
Sucker Bet: LA Dodgers (+385)
Darkhorse Bet: NY Yankees (+1100)
