Final Four Preview: Duke-North Carolina Showdown

Basketball Apr 01, 2022

March Madness couldn't have scripted a more highly-anticipated semi-final game than two bitter in-state rivals tipping off on college basketball's biggest court.

These two programs have won a combined 11 national championships between them, yet have never met at this late stage of the tournament.

Saturday's drama is heightened by the possibility this could be Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final game in his legendary career. In fact, these same underdog Taheels ruined Krzyzewski’s home finale in the last meeting, winning outright 94-81. It was a balanced upset, as four UNC players scored 20 points or more. The Tar Heels closed as a shocking 11-point underdog in that game and could be getting shortchanged again with this spread at +4. The Blue Devils would love nothing more than to avenge that bitter defeat last month.

No doubt, with a trip to the National Championship on the line, this meeting between two ACC foes makes for one of the most riveting Final Four matchups of all-time.

This game will be played at the Superdome in New Orleans. The tip-off at 7:49 pm CT.

OPINION (powered by pointspreads.ca):

North Carolina is a -4 favourite with a betting total of 151, according to Spreads.ca.

One interesting historical stat is the success of underdogs, which own a 32-26-1 ATS mark in their last 25 years off meetings. UNC is also 20-12 ATS as a dog versus Duke during that stretch.

Given there's so much on the line here, there's every reason to expect this game will be close and could go either way.

For that reason, we like North Carolina plus the points.
