The biggest night in e-sports is coming up and it’s bound to get a little scary. On Halloween, DAMWON and Suning Gaming will face off in a best of five matchup to win the League of Legends World Finals.
Suning Gaming defeated tournament favourites Top Esports in the semifinals last week 3-1 with an epic performance. This upstart team, ranked 11th in Spring, is now only three wins away from the championship title.
What’s the secret?
Suning’s head coach Shih “Chashao” Yi-hao says:
“Since expectations were low, we didn’t feel pressured.”
As previously reported, Suning needed a bold strategy and a little luck to come away with a win over TES, and that’s what they had on Sunday. Chen “Bin” Zebin’s top lane performance skyrocketed and the team picked solid champions, like Shen, who has a 66.7% win rate in this year’s Worlds. Zebin has a difficult matchup versus DAMWON’s Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon but he says he’s “confident” he can beat Nuguri, although “it’ll be very chaotic.” For a team that grew so much during the course of the tournament, outplaying 20 teams to get here, Suning has proven itself a worthy foe for the DAMWON powerhouse.
DAMWON’s only defeat in this tournament came at the hands of JD Gaming in the group stage, a team that Suning defeated 3-1 in the quarterfinals. They toyed with DRX and G2 in the quarter and semi-finals, coming away with only a single loss to G2. One of Suning’s biggest weaknesses is their mid lane, where DAMWON excels. Heo “Showmaker” Su should make easy work of Xiang “Angel” Tao, so Suning will have to expend resources to protect him. But where Nuguri may have felt more comfortable in the top lane before, he’ll be out of his comfort zone versus Bin. Look for the bot lane to make or break this matchup.
DAMWON’s superior talent should vault them into a 3-2 win over Suning, winning them the Summoner’s Cup and giving Showmaker MVP distinctions.
Betting lines at play.spreads.ca currently have DAMWON as heavy favourites at -235 while Suning Gaming sits at +180, a solid value bet for the upset.
