Three Picks to Consider for NFL Week 4

NFL Oct 02, 2020

After a crazy Week 2 where multiple stars went down with injuries, last week was a return to the mean.  There was still plenty of news and storylines as a staggering 15 teams eclipsed 30 points.

Four games had both teams eclipse that mark including wild games between Seattle and Dallas along with Buffalo and Los Angeles – defenses were put on notice.  This week does not have the same marquee matchups but there are some interesting games on the slate.

Let’s take a look at three intriguing matchups in Week 4 of the NFL season.

Underdog Pick of the Week

New England Patriots (+7) at Kansas City Chiefs   O/U 52.5

After defeating Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens 34-20 in Week 3, Kansas City seems to have picked up right where they left off in 2019. Patrick Mahomes continues to elevate his standing in the NFL quarterback hierarchy and the Chiefs seem destined for another long postseason run.

Meanwhile the story in New England is that there is no story in New England.  Cam Newton has  ushered in a new era where quarterbacks can move past the line of scrimmage with the football. The Patriots can wear you down with their top ranked rushing attack (178.0 YPG) and their approach is to throw numerous options at you to defend. If Kansas City has one weakness it is their pass defense which is 27th in the NFL allowing 153 yards per game. Look for New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to try and slow the game down to keep Mahomes and Co. off the field

I have Kansas City winning a low scoring game but New England covering.

Prediction: Chiefs 27 – 21 Patriots   (Under)

Home Underdog of the Week

Washington Football Team (+14) vs Baltimore Ravens   O/U 46

These two teams are coming into this game after poor performances. As mentioned, Baltimore struggled at Kansas City, while the Washington Football team was thumped 34-20 by the suddenly surging Cleveland Browns.

Baltimore is a superior team and should bounce back with a strong effort yet winning by nearly two touchdowns on the road is a tall task.

Washington has a strong defensive line and is second in the NFL with 13 sacks. Lamar Jackson had trouble with the blitz against Kansas City, Washington is not a heavy blitz team, but they can cause problems rushing just four.

I like Baltimore to win in a fairly close game early with Washington to cover.

Prediction: Baltimore 27 – 17 Washington   (Under)

Lock of the Week

Arizona Cardinals (-3.5) at Carolina Panthers   O/U 51

Arizona seeks to rebound after a tough loss versus Detroit, while Carolina earned a solid road win against the Los Angeles Chargers 21-16. However, Carolina is banged up on both sides of the ball and is 0-4-1 against the spread as a home underdog. The Panthers struggle against both the pass and the run, Kyler Murray is poised for a big day. Arizona is in the top ten on both sides of the ball, while Carolina has not been able to run the ball without Christian McCaffrey.

I predict Arizona wins big.

Prediction: Cardinals 34 – 21 Panthers   (Over)
