Red Sox-Blue Jays Weekend Series to Set Pace for Second Half of Regular Season

MLB Jul 22, 2022

Will the Blue Jays wake up and start meeting high expectations and/or will the Red Sox eventually take one of the coveted Wild Card spots?

It might not seem like July baseball games are critical. However, given the way the American League East standings are going, this weekend's three-game series between Toronto and Boston could set the pace for what to expect for the remainder of the regular season.

Will the Blue Jays wake up and start meeting high expectations and/or will the Red Sox eventually take one of the coveted wild card spots? Note: We presume this AL East race has been settled with the Yankees' 15-game lead, so that leaves four contenders in this division vying for possible wild cards in the coming few months.

Here's a glance at the division standings, which shows why this series is more important to both teams than usual:

In Friday's opener, the Red Sox host the Blue Jays at Fenway Park. The expected starting pitchers will be Kevin Gausman and Nathan Eovaldi.

Friday's game throws the first pitch out at 7:10 pm EST. Saturday and Sunday are day games in Boston, so be aware of the early starting times.

Here's a look at the latest odds, according to SPREADS.CA:

Prediction (powered by Pointspreads.ca):

Toronto closed out the first half of the season by winning three games in a row against the undermanned Kansas City Royals at home. Is that really impressive (they Royals were without 10 players and used a utility lineup). While the Jays are 4-1 in their last five games and should be feeling confident of their chances to win their first game of the second half, we aren't giving recent form much weight.

Yes, Toronto will face the struggling Red Sox, losers of 7 of the last 10. But let's not be deceived. The Jays have struggled against good teams.  They're also 20-24 on the road, which is nothing to brag about.

Now, they face Nathan Eovaldi on the mound for Boston.  Eovaldi is 4-2 this season with a 3.34 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.  The Red Sox have won all of his last five starts, dating back to May.

We like Boston in the opener, and also lean toward the the Red Sox to take 2 out of 3 in this series.
