Edmonton Elks at Ottawa RedBlacks
Edmonton -7.5, Total: 42.5
Tonight's meeting is between the two teams I have rated at the bottom
of the CFL, but as poorly as Edmonton has played, their problems are
nothing compared to what the Ottawa RedBlacks are going through. On
top of Ottawa's woes throughout this year, they are down their top two
QBs. But not only will they be on QB #3, Caleb Evans, but they plan to
split reps with QB #4, Taryn Christion, and between the two of them, they
have taken a combined zero snaps in regular season professional football.
Meanwhile, the Elks have taken QB Trevor Harris off the injured list,
but say they'll start Taylor Cornelius who played two weeks ago when
Edmonton got beat at home by the Blue Bombers. Cornelius got some extra
practice time during the Elks' bye week while Ottawa is playing on short
rest, having lost at home to Hamilton last Wednesday.
The game opened Elks -6.5 and the line quickly shot up to two-score
territory, an embarrassing line for any team playing at home against the
second worst team in the league. However, I can't say it isn't not
justified. How do you rate Ottawa's QB situation? It sure sounds like
this game is nothing to Ottawa but an evaluation for who should helm the
team until their QB situation stabilizes, yet schedule-wise this is
probably the most winable spot for the rest of the year.
The total opened at 44.5 and it, too, was quickly bet down. Ottawa
has only scored more than 13 points once so far this year. With a
7.5 point line, that projects to a team total of about 17.5. Edmonton's
defense is near the bottom of the league, but do we expect Ottawa to
break 17, especially with two complete rookies? If not, then at least
one of the total or the Edmonton side has to be a good bet. I hate
betting with the crowd, but I'm not betting on Ottawa or the over either.
