Two Saturday Games Highlight CFL Week 6 Action

Oh-Canada Jul 15, 2022

In a rare treat, the CFL offers two day games on Saturday. Here's our breakdown of both matchups along with our predictions and picks.

This Saturday features two games in the CFL.

In the early day game, the Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-1) and Toronto Argonauts (1-2) kick off in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

The late afternoon game will showcase two struggling teams as the Ottawa Redblacks (0-4) take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-4).

Here's a glance at the odds on both games according to SPREADS.CA:

Roughriders vs. Argonauts

Location: Acadia University, Wolfville, NS
Date: Saturday, July 16, 2022
Kickoff Time: 2:00 pm EST

Oddsmakers expect a close game.  The Roughriders are currently a slim -2.5-point favourites for this game to be played on at a neutral site. Note: This is the first CFL game ever played in Wolfville.

This line is a mystery.  Why isn't Saskatchewan favoured by more points?  They're 4-1 and facing a 1-2 team that's struggling.  Moreover, the West Division has dominated the East Division this season, which is turning into a continental divide of good versus bad teams.

Toronto has no excuse not to show up and perform.  They should be prepared since they're coming off a second bye week.  Their previous game was a noble effort, ending in a heartbreaking one-point loss to the mighty Winnipeg Blue Bombers.  Prior to that, the Argos got crushed at BC Place in Week 3, losing 44-3.

So, which Toronto team will show up this week?  Will it be the crew that took the Grey Cup champs to the wire or the squad that was destroyed by more than five touchdowns at BC?

The Roughriders are fresh off a 28-13 win against the winless Ottawa Redblacks, which allows them to keep pace with the best teams in the West.  On defence, the Riders rank second in the CFL surrendering only 329 yards and 20 points per game allowed.

It's tough to see where Toronto enjoys any advantages in this matchup, or perhaps we should say mismatch, aside from defensive injuries to the Riders. Saskatchewan is clearly the better team and we are giving a very low number considering how differently these two teams have looked so far this season.

We'll back Saskatchewan at -2.5 and also lean over 46 points.

Tiger-Cats vs. Redblacks

Location: Tim Hortons Field, Hamilton, ON
Date: Saturday, July 16, 2022
Kickoff Time: 5:00 pm EST

After three razor-thin losses versus top competition (Winnipeg and BC) to begin their season, the Redblacks were blasted last week, losing 28-13 to the Roughriders. They also lost improving quarterback and on-the-field leader Jeremiah Masoli.

That makes for a tough spot for the visiting underdogs, who are +7-point underdogs this week at Hamilton.

As for the T-Cats, they've been a mystery. Hamilton was expected to be a Grey Cup contender entering this season, but has floundered to a ridiculous 0-4 start.  This home matchup versus a team that's also having problems and minus their starting QB sure looks like a prime spot to regain confidence and finally post their first win.

The best bet on this game could be the under, based on historical trends.  The under is 7-3 in the Tiger-Cats' last 10 games versus teams with a losing record, while the Redblacks are 9-1 to the under in their previous 10 games. The under has also cashed in 5 straight meetings between these teams when playing in Hamilton.

We lean to Hamilton laying -7 and feel strongly about the under with the O/U at 44.5

Predictions (powered by Pointspreads.ca):

Saskatchewan -2.5

Saskatchewan-Toronto over 46 points

Hamilton -7

Ottawa-Hamilton under 44.5 points
