Major League Baseball – Odds and Notes

Opening weekend included 14 games on Saturday (although there was one postponement), and will continue on Sunday with another dozen matchups.  Just four days into the new season, there have already been several surprises.

In the American League, Detroit and Kansas City were forecasted to be among the worst teams in baseball.  Yet, both teams have roared out to a 2-0 start.  The Royals defeating the horrible Texas Rangers might not be shocking, but the Tigers dominating both games against the heavily favoured Cleveland Indians caught many by surprise.

The same can be said for Balitmore, currently in first place in the stacked AL East with a 2-0 record (that's not a typo).  The Orioles' good fortune is unlikely to last, but it's sure been an interesting opening week.

In the AL West, Houston looks to be the class of the division, hammering the Oakland A's in three straight road games.  The Astros are one of only two teams in the majors with a perfect 3-0 record.

In the National League, the other team with a perfect 3-0 record is the San Diego Padres, who are predicted to be in serious contention for the pennant for the first time in decades.  Meanwhile, Atlanta has been the biggest disappointment, losing both of their games to the Phillies, who are atop the NL East.  Check that:  The biggest disappointment has been the much-anticipated Washington Nationals-New York Mets series being postponed due to COVID protocols.  Neither team has thrown a pitch yet.

As for the NL Central, all five teams are 1-1.
