No Dogs Allowed: Cherry Picks the Leafs

NHL Jan 29, 2022

Editors Note:  Since Don Cherry joined us at POINTSPREADS.CA last month, he's gone 4 wins and 2 losses with his free picks (+1.8 units).  Today, he's brought in his canine capper "Blue" to help make today's pick.

Don Cherry's NHL Pick for Thursday:

Toronto Maple Leafs at Detroit Red Wings:  The Red Wings have just come off a big win against the Pens, while the Leafs had a tough shoot-out win against the Ducks.  I have always said – bet against the team that has just come off a road trip and is playing their first game at home.  For some reason, they usually come out flat.  This is a back-to-back game for the Wings, coming off a 3-game road trip. Even though the Leafs have 3 games on hand over the Bruins, the B’s are starting to close the gap for 3rd spot, so the Leafs need to grab as many points as they can against weaker teams.  The question for me is – will the Leafs cover the -1.5 goals spread?  The Wings have 7 players from Ontario and 12 from Canada, so they will want to put on a good show on "Hockey Night in Canada."  I think they will put on a good fight.  For that reason I don’t think the Leafs will cover the -1.5 spread, so I will pick the Leafs straight up as moneyline faves.

The Cherry Pick:   Toronto at -250 (moneyline)
